La Chine déclare la guerre au Bitcoin et aux crypto-monnaies


Pekin interdit désormais à toutes les institutions financières, aux sociétés de paiement et aux plateformes Internet d’autoriser le commerce des cryptomonnaies, qu’il s’agisse de Bitcoin,p d’Ethereum et autres monnaies numériques. Derrière des justifications sécuritaires et environnementales, la Chine entend éliminer toute concurrence pour sa propre monnaie numérique, le e-yuan.

La Banque centrale de Chine a déclaré vendredi que toutes les transactions liées aux cryptomonnaies étaient illégales. Pékin interdit désormais à toutes les institutions financières, aux sociétés de paiement et aux plateformes Internet d’autoriser le commerce des cryptomonnaies. En outre, la banque centrale chinoise cherche à cibler les échanges étrangers, expliquant dans son communiqué que « la fourniture de services par des échanges de devises virtuelles à l’étranger à des résidents chinois par le biais d’Internet » est illégale.

Sans surprise, cette décision a fait chuter les cours des cryptomonnaies, à l’image du Bitcoin qui a accusé une baisse de 9 % pour passer sous les 42.000 dollars. Même sanction pour l’Ethereum, dont la valeur a perdu 10 % pour passer sous la barre des 2.800 dollars. Des chutes qui se sont stabilisées, et qui ne devraient pas freiner l’attrait pour les monnaies numériques dans le reste du monde.

Selon Pékin, le commerce des cryptomonnaies perturbe « l’ordre économique et financier », en participant à des activités illégales ou criminelles telles que les jeux d’argent, les collectes de fonds illégales, la fraude, les systèmes pyramidaux et le blanchiment d’argent.

Cette interdiction vise aussi l’activité de minage, considérée comme dangereuse pour l’environnement car elle engendre des risques et entrave les objectifs de neutralité carbone. Résultat, la Commission nationale chinoise du développement et de la réforme a déclaré qu’elle s’efforcerait de supprimer le soutien financier et l’approvisionnement en électricité pour les sociétés qui encouragent le minage.

Derrière ces justifications environnementales et sécuritaires, il faut surtout rappeler que la Chine possède sa propre monnaie numérique, le e-yuan, et que ses mesures répressives permettront surtout d’éliminer la concurrence.
